The Freedom Flotilla Sails to Gaza in May

(London, UK) On May 24, 2010, the Freedom Flotilla sets sail for Gaza determined to, once again, challenge Israel’s blockade of 1.5 million Palestinians trapped in an open-air prison. Under the coordination of the Free Gaza Movement, numerous human rights organizations, including the Turkish Relief Foundation (IHH), the Perdana Global Peace Organization from Malaysia, the European Campaign to End the Siege of Gaza, and the Swedish and Greek Boat to Gaza initiatives will send three cargo ships loaded with reconstruction, medical and educational supplies. At least five passenger boats with over 600 people on board will accompany the cargo ships.
These passengers include members of Parliament from around the world, U.N., human rights and trade union activists, as well as journalists who will document the largest coordinated effort to directly confront Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza and take in basic supplies.
Said Mary Hughes Thompson, one of Free Gaza’s co-founders, “Although we were happy with the first trips, it was bitter-sweet, knowing that our small boats and symbolic amounts of relief paled in comparison to what was really needed in Gaza. Now, we finally feel we are helping to organize a powerful action, one with the potential to translate into a sustained campaign of much more effective challenges to Israel's brutal siege.”
In the past three months, Israel has limited fuel to run the power station. Much of Gaza is often in darkness. There are just enough trucks coming in to barely prevent total starvation, and Egypt, complicit with the Israeli-US policy of blockading Palestinians, is building an underground steel wall to prevent people in Gaza from bringing in vitally needed supplies through tunnels.

The Palestinian Authority's (PA) Minister of Prisoners Affairs, Issa Qaraqi, holds Israel responsible for the death of Raed Abu Hammad, 27, who was in an Israeli jail for 18 months. Hammad was reportedly beaten by Israeli prison guards to death. He was found dead in his solitary confinement cell. Qaraqi said on Thursday that the cause of death was from "a blow to the lower spinal cord with a direct hit." The minister added that based on reports he had received, the detainee had been kicked strongly in the lower back. The PA will, in the beginning of next week, request from the Magistrate court in Beer Sheva, to investigate the cause of death based on available reports. Israeli authorities have dismissed the allegations as unfounded and declined to give any details. More than 7,000 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli jails.

Israeli tanks and bulldozers have invaded the Abassan al-Mubra village in the southern district of Gaza Strip, destroying a number of Palestinian farm lands. The tanks also opened fire at residential homes on Thursday as bulldozers uprooted trees and destroyed farm lands owned by local Palestinian farmers, witnesses told Palestine's Maan news agency. Israeli tanks frequently invade border areas in the Gaza Strip and destroy lands with the aim to create a security buffer zone along the Israeli-Gaza border. Meanwhile, in yet another invasion of the northern West Bank, Israeli troops entered the region and detained fifteen Palestinian civilians in the early hours of Thursday. Local sources reported that in Jenin, a villager sustained light injuries after soldiers attacked him while on his way to work. In the city of Jenin, Israeli troops detained three men. Another six teenagers were taken away by soldiers during house-to-house search, targeting the village of Azon near Qalqilia. Three men and three teenagers were also detained from the village of Taqua near Beit Lahm (Bethlehem). The Israeli army radio announced that all the 15 detained on Thursday were taken to military detention camps for questioning.

Iran's anti-piracy naval forces have rescued an Iranian oil supertanker following a Somali pirate attack in the dangerous waters of the Gulf of Aden. The oil tanker was sailing from the southern Iranian Island of Khark to Egypt with a 300,000-ton cargo of crude oil worth USD 150 million, IRNA cited a navy statement. The supertanker was reportedly attacked by a fleet of 15 pirate boats as soon as it entered the Gulf of Aden “a few days ago”, but the hijacking attempt was thwarted after the Iranian Navy exchanged fire with the sea bandits. The vessel is now en route to its original destination with a naval escort. Since November 2008, the Iranian Navy has dispatched seven naval vessels to patrol the pirate-infested waters of Somalia. Despite an internationally-backed EU anti-piracy mission, heavily-armed bandits have become increasingly emboldened over the past few years and are spreading piracy further into the Indian Ocean. Earlier this month, the Iranian Navy prevented a similar attack on another Iranian tanker bound for Turkey. Last month, a group of Iranian fishermen were rescued by a Spanish frigate working under the European Union's NAVFOR Somalia. Pirates had left the tied-up fishermen for dead after looting their goods and emptying their oil.

Former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei has expressed support for Palestinian resistance, calling Gaza the world's largest jail. In a report published by UPI on Tuesday, ElBaradei described resistance the only path open to the Palestinian people, because the Israeli occupation only understands the language of force. "The peace process has become a stupid joke which we talk about without achieving any progress," the Egyptian diplomat reportedly said, adding that the Arabs should back their negotiation option with force and deterrence. He also criticized Cairo's construction of a steel wall along the border with the Gaza Strip, aimed at disrupting Palestinians' "survival" tunnel network, as harmful to Egypt's reputation. He described Egypt's construction of the wall as joining Israel in its closure of the strip, which he said "has become the world's largest prison." "The logical solution to the problem would be to close the tunnels and open border crossings while creating a free trade zone in Rafah where Palestinians can trade and then return to Gaza." More than two years of a crippling Israeli blockade has pushed some 1.5 million Gazans on the verge of starvation and has irreparably hurt Gaza's economy as the siege totally cuts off the territory from the outside world. As Israel refuses to open Gaza border crossings it has closed since 2007, the Rafah crossing — the only terminal not under Tel Aviv's control — is sealed off by Egyptian officials. The 67-year old ElBaradei is largely expected to run in Egypt's 2011 presidential elections, as opposition parties are seeking to pressure President Hosni Mubarak for democratic reforms.

Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has lashed out at the United States for its dual-based nuclear policies. "The US is working on a new generation of nuclear bombs. It also defends Israel that has tens of nuclear warheads but it opposes Iran's peaceful use of nuclear energy. This shows a double-standard in their nuclear policies," ISNA quoted Vahidi as saying on Wednesday. The Iranian minister also rejected the possibility of a military strike against Iran's nuclear sites by Israel or the United States. "The Zionist regime of Israel is too weak to attack Iran," he added. "No trace of Israel will remain if the Zionist regime declares a war on Iran," he warned. A number of European countries has witnessed lately a series of events in solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails organized by different human rights and civil organizations. Palestinian and international institutions in Europe had declared 2010 a year for the defense of the issue of prisoners after the issue of occupied Jerusalem was the center of Palestinian activities in Europe last year. In this context, various popular ceremonies were held during this month in a number of Italian cities including Milan, Turin and Brescia dedicated to highlighting the suffering of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, where halls and sport stadiums were crowded with thousands of people who attended at the invitation of the Palestinian assembly in Italy. Friends of humanity international and the institution of south house will organize in April 17 a symposium on the occasion of the Palestinian prisoner day in the Austrian capital Vienna. Among the speakers in this symposium will be former Egyptian deputy minister of foreign affairs Abdullah Al-Ash’al and European lawmaker Alexandra Tyne. A documentary film showing the harsh incarceration conditions in Israeli jails will be screened during the event. For its part, Friends of humanity recently issued a comprehensive report on the detention conditions of Palestinian prisoners and the violations committed against them by Israeli jailers during 2009. The issue of Palestinian prisoners will also be high on the agenda of the upcoming Palestinians in Europe conference that is slated to be held in the German capital Berlin.

The only power plant in the blockaded Gaza Strip has shut down as a crippling Israeli closure keeps the impoverished region stripped of much needed fuel.
The facility was forces to close on Friday, following a week of limited fuel imports and Israeli authorities' refusal to open any border-crossings.
Palestinian liaison official Raed Fattouh confirmed the closure of all crossings and that they were expected to remain closed for Saturday as well.
That would mean the populated enclave will dip in a blackout for the next three days until fuel supplies are allowed and transported to the power plant.
Vice President of the Palestinian Energy Authority Kanaan Ubeid said all of the four generators at the facility had ceased to function as fuel supplies had reduced from 2,200 units per day to 750 units. "This is not enough to run even one generator on," Ubeid said.
Gaza's sole power plant has been grappled with fuel shortages since December, when European officials handed over responsibility for fuel transfers to the Palestinian Authority upon a request by Ramallah that the aid from the European Union be channeled into civil servant salaries.
Ubeid blamed the transfer and corresponding closure of the main fuel transfer terminal at Nahal Oz for the shortages, saying imports have fallen by half ever since.
The Gaza Strip has been under a paralyzing Israeli siege since 2007 when the democratically elected Hamas-led Palestinian government had to limit its rule to the coastal sliver, while the Western-backed Fatah mounted its own government in the West Bank.
Israel maintained the blockade during and after its devastating military offensive on the Gaza Strip which left more than 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians, killed and thousands of others injured.
Three weeks of relentless aerial bombardments and ground incursions devastated much of the region's infrastructure and leveled scores of residential and office buildings.
Gaza still lies in ruin as Israel prevents the delivery of the materials needed for the reconstruction into the Palestinian territory.

If this ill-treatment continues and the world carries on with the same trend, then Hamas will be forced to find "new friends" for the Israeli soldier Shalit, he said. Almost 10,000 Palestinian prisoners are being held in Israeli prisons. Earlier, in retaliation to Israel's six mortar shells that injured six in the beleaguered Gaza Strip, Israeli Army Radio reported that three mortar bombs were fired at a military unit patrolling near the border with Israel. No injures were reported.

Israeli forces have crossed into the Gaza Strip while tensions remain high following Tel Aviv's Friday incursion into the Hamas-run Palestinian coastal enclave.
Israeli soldiers moved around 500 meters (yards) inside Gaza on Sunday in several armored vehicles including bulldozers.
Witnesses said the troops were predominantly targeting olive groves and almond fields in the Abasan al-Jadida area east of Khan Yunis.
They dug large trenches and fired warning shots to keep farmers away, but there were no reports of casualties.
Sunday's incursion was close to the site where Israeli tanks, bulldozers and jeeps, backed by helicopters, carried out a strike late Friday damaging two houses and killing a Palestinian. Seven people were also wounded in the attack.
In an earlier skirmish, two Israeli soldiers were killed and two others wounded.

A senior Israeli minister has threatened that Tel Aviv will "liquidate" Hamas sooner or later, adding that Israel may even launch a new offensive on the Gaza Strip.
Israel's Finance minister Yuval Steinitz said Tel Aviv has not set a timetable for when it will eliminate the Palestinian movement, but he underscored that it would happen sooner or later.
He said Israel cannot tolerate the movement becoming stronger. Steinitz did not rule out the possibility of a new invasion of Gaza, saying Tel Aviv had no choice, but to take such action.

"American pressure isn't conductive and isn't fair, because the Netanyahu government made two enormous gestures toward the Palestinians: The opportunity to improve the Palestinian economy, and the settlement freeze," Haaretz quoted the Israeli minister as saying on Sunday.
"The US needs to understand that the atmosphere it created in the Middle East, makes Washington now less friendly to Israel, and isn't making the Palestinians more willing to compromise; it further adds to their rejection of the peace process," he added.
The Israeli minister's claims about Israel's settlement freeze comes as Tel Aviv announced plans to build 1,600 more settlement units in east Jerusalem (Al-Quds), which was occupied by Israel in 1967, a move considered illegal under the international law.

A senior Israeli minister has threatened that Tel Aviv will "liquidate" Hamas sooner or later, adding that Israel may even launch a new offensive on the Gaza Strip.
Israel's Finance minister Yuval Steinitz said Tel Aviv has not set a timetable for when it will eliminate the Palestinian movement, but he underscored that it would happen sooner or later.
He said Israel cannot tolerate the movement becoming stronger. Steinitz did not rule out the possibility of a new invasion of Gaza, saying Tel Aviv had no choice, but to take such action.

Hands off the Iran
We all remember how the war on Iraq was prepared. As the sanctions and the embargo caused half a million deaths (mainly children, because of the lack of medecine, milk and necessary goods), Iraq was accused to store "weapons of mass destruction". How can we forget the great play-acting through which Colin Powell, in order to justify what was going to be the biggest massacre after Vietnam, went as far as deceiving the UN Assembly by showing the famous "smoking gun"?

As the war threats escalate, we express our disdain for the statements made by Berlusconi during his visit to Israel. Not only did he justify the indiscriminate massacres against the Palestinians in Ghaza, and not only did he defend the racist and segregationist idea of Israel as a purely Jewish state (with the virtual exclusion of its Arab population from the political rights).
Trampling on the peaceful sentiments of the Italian people and prejudicing the very national interests, Berlusconi assured the Israelis that Italy will stop its economical relationship with Teheran and will actively support the request for severe sanctions. Four Palestinian youth were killed this weekend in the West Bank. Army denied live ammo despite evidence.
Four teenagers in the West Bank villages of Iraq Burin and Awarta were killed this weekend by Israeli soldiers. Initially the army denied the use of live ammunition but an X-ray of an M-16 bullet lodged in the skull of one of the killed disproved the claim. In the second incident, where Israeli soldiers detained two teenage farmers, the army claimed the Palestinians were shot (one with five bullets and the other with at least two) because they attempted to attack a soldier with pitchforks, knives, or axes. A senior British official claims that fresh sanctions on Iran are necessary to prevent more "dangerous" scenarios like an Israeli strike on Iran.
Nicholas Hopton, deputy director of the Foreign Office's International Security Directorate, said Britain viewed sanctions as the only leverage that could force Iran to negotiate over its nuclear program.
Hopton urged Brazil to join countries that support new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.
He outlined the "very direct message" he was taking to Brasilia on the matter, in comments to reporters late Monday in Sao Paulo.
"This is about trying to encourage Iran to engage in a real dialogue. Since 2006 we've been trying to have a real dialogue, and the Iranians have been playing games," he said.
"Either you have a pre-emptive Israeli strike, and they're very serious when they talk about that possibility, or you have a situation where Iran should get a nuclear weapon and other countries in the region feel very threatened by it, can decide to follow the same path, and very soon you've got a much more fragile Middle East than you've got at the moment, with much more risk of nuclear conflagration," he said.
Tehran, which is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, has repeatedly declared that its nuclear program aims producing electricity and isotopes for medical applications.
The IAEA inspectors have found no evidence of diversion of nuclear materials from civilian to military applications.
Israel, which reportedly possesses the sole nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, has repeatedly voiced its determination to halt Iran's nuclear program, even through military means.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has warned Israel that initiating a new military conflict in the Middle East would not save it from downfall.
Speaking in the southern Iranian Province of Hormozagan on Thursday, Ahmadinejad said that Israel was a Western prodigy that had now "reached the end of its road."
"See what has become of Israel. They [the West] gathered the most criminal people in the world and stationed them in our region with lies and fabricated scenarios. They waged wars, committed massive aggression… and made millions of people homeless," he told a crowd of supporters in the provincial capital, Bandar-Abbas.
"Today, it is clear that Israel is the most hated regime in the world… It is not useful for its masters [the West] anymore. They are in doubt now. They wonder whether to continue spending money on this regime or not," said Ahmadinejad.
"But whether they want it or not, with god's grace, this regime will be annihilated and Palestinians and other regional nations will be rid of its bad omen," he added.
The top Iranian executive official pointed out that he did not believe that "even a new military conflict" could save the Israeli regime.
"They think in their underdeveloped minds that if they launch another war against Lebanon or Syria it might help them survive a little longer. I am telling them that you are in a situation now that more aggressions or wars will not save you."
Ahmadinejad also advised the US and its allies to pull their troops out of the Middle East and stop "making mischief."
"What are you doing in our region? Why are you deploying military forces here," he asked.
"If you think military deployment will help you seize the oil in Iraq and in the Persian Gulf, I must tell you that the young generation of the Middle East will cut your hands off from the oil reserves of the Persian Gulf," he added.
"But whether they want it or not, with god's grace, this regime will be annihilated and Palestinians and other regional nations will be rid of its bad omen," he added.

STRASBOURG (EJP)---Despite intense lobbying efforts from Jewish groups and attempts by the Christian-Democrats to prevent a vote, the European Parliament adopted Wednesday in Strasbourg a joint resolution urging "both sides" to follow up the Goldstone Report’s conclusions by conducting "investigations within five months”.
The resolution, tabled by the four political groups - the Socialists, Liberals, Greens and the European Left- was approved with 335 votes in favour, 287 against and 43 abstentions.

After leaders of all the major EP parties had agreed on the wording of a draft demanding implementation of the controversial document - which accused Israel of war crimes in Gaza last year and proposed prosecuting Israeli officials in the International Criminal Court - the European Union's legislative body was scheduled to vote on the measure Wednesday.
But Tuesday, leaders of the parties backed away from the draft, after the president of the European Jewish Congress, Moshe Kantor, warned them that adopting it would seriously harm EU-Israel ties.
"It appears inconceivable that while the United Nations itself hasn't yet officially adopted this report, the European Parliament, in this motion for a resolution, calls for and demands its implementation," he wrote in a letter sent to the heads of major EP parties.
The joint motion for the resolution was removed from the plenary session's agenda after the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) blocked it.
"The European Jewish Congress played an important role in blocking the legitimization of the Goldstone report," an official from the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The Iranian Embassy in Rome has made a request to visit Hamid Masoumi-Nejad, a veteran Iranian reporter jailed in Italy on charges of arms trafficking.
Italy arrested at least seven people on Wednesday, including five Italians and two Iranians, accusing them of smuggling weapons to Iran in violation of an international arms embargo.
One of the targets of Italian police was Hamid Masoumi-Nejad, who had been working as a senior correspondent for the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in Rome for more than 15 years.
A vocal critic of Berlusconi-led Italian policies, Masoumi-Nejad had received repeated threats from Italian authorities over his hard-hitting coverage of the scandal-ridden Berlusconi government and its increasingly intimate ties with the Israeli regime.
Four days after the reporter's arrest and subsequent imprisonment in the northwestern city of Turin, Iran's ambassador to Italy Mohammad Ali Hosseini made an official request to meet with him.

The Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, speaking on the merry anniversary of the birth of Islam's Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), underscored the importance of the Palestinian issue for the Muslim world and called on Muslims to unite around the teachings of the holy prophet.
Ayatollah Khamenei described the "forged, Zionist regime of Israel" as a "dangerous cancer tumor" and insisted that "the only way (for Muslims) to defend against this severe cancer and its supporters is to return to Islam" and unite around the teachings of the glorious Prophet of Islam.
Addressing a group of Iranian officials and foreign guests and dignitaries in Tehran on Thursday, the Leader expounded on the reasons for numerous problems and shortcomings in the Muslim world in defending their rights and cited "tireless efforts by the US, the British, and other enemies of Islam in sowing discord" among Muslim masses.
The leader of the Islamic Revolution then emphasized that such bullying and domineering countries are well-aware that "discord and duplicity" can divert the focus of the Muslims from the very important issue of Palestine. "This is the reason that they resort to any possible means to flare the flame of ethnic, religious and geographic conflict among the hearts and minds of the Shia and Sunni, as well as the followers of other Islamic sects."
Ayatollah Khamenei further spoke of Israeli oppression of the Palestinians, describing the occupation of Palestine as a wound on the body of the Islamic Nation."
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution also declared that "unity of Muslims and defending the Palestinian issue are among the aspirations and priorities of the Islamic Republic (of Iran)."
Recalling the words and priorities of the late founder of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini regarding Muslim unity and the Palestinian issue, the Leader added, "The Islamic establishment, all of the country's officials and the great nation of Iran view such principlist issues as religiously obligatory and their words (on these issues) have been and remain the same."

Lebanon's resistance movement Hezbollah says that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has been biased towards Israel.
Hezbollah issued a statement on Tuesday in reaction to Ban's report on the implementation of Resolution 1701, issued following Israel's 33-day war against Lebanon in summer 2006.
The Islamic movement charged Ban with applying double standards in his report on the resolution and with justifying Tel Aviv's aggressions against the Lebanese nation.
The statement added Ban's report glosses over Israel's daily violations of Lebanese airspace as well as the regime's spy rings in Lebanon.
Hezbollah reiterated its condemnation of such acts for threatening Lebanon's security and breach of international laws.
